Design Within Reach – Accessories

What a great store! It looks like a studio with beautiful and original pieces from famous  designers like Ted Boerner, Giorgio Soressi, Flemming Busk, Charles and Ray Eames, Jane Risom and others. Everything looks very expensive, but I recommend this store for a window-shopping exercise and the occasional floor sample or sale item. Give attention to accessories. Last week, l bought wonderful “Puntino Demitasse Cups” designed by Giulio Capellini for just $27.00. Even in an expensive store, you can buy some pieces for affordable prices. If you don’t have enough money to buy a sofa designed by Giorgio Soressi, don’t buy it! Buy a couch that’s less expensive and dress it with accessories such as pillows or a throw designed by Ivan Pratt. This will make your living room more attractive to the eye. Below, I have some examples of Design Within Reach accessories. If you ever dreamed of having extremely well-made pieces, this is the time for your long-term dream to come true.   Reiko Kaneko Terra-Cotta Platter After training at Central Saint Martins, …

Happiness in Your Home – According to Science

I grew up hearing my grandmother saying that home was the best place in the world. Anyone disagree? Today I know this is not only a theory of my dear granny, but also proven by science. Our house conveys security, warmth and well-being, and it is  precisely this feeling that makes us feel homesick when we are traveling.  Science has proven that it is possible to make our home better and (why not?) even happier. Paint a wall green or yellow   Yellow and green are colors that bring more feelings of happiness and well-being, according to a study by the University of Vrije in the Netherlands. Make a floral arrangement   A long study, conducted by Rutgers University in New Jersey, demonstrated that having  flowers at home brings a sensation of comfort and causes happiness. Spread photos around the house   Try putting a picture frame with a beautiful picture of your family or a friend, next to your bed. Scientists at the University of Portsmouth, in England guarantee that this will make you happier. According to this …

Darling Dahlia

Tips to have a Dahlia Garden The Dahlia is the national flower of Mexico; it is delicate, beautiful, and with an endless variety of color. These plants grow and bloom best in full sun and tolerate most soil types, but prefer a  well drained sandy soil. If your soil is heavy or clay, just add sand and peat moss. Water once a week. If it’s very hot, water more frequently. Do not choose too tall varieties if you have a small garden. Some dahlias can be two meters. Plant then in a sunny place, then the flowers develop well. Plant the tuber in late April. Make sure they covered with five centimeters of soil. Immediately place a stick to support them. Some species get top-heavy flowers and fall quickly. If you want a bouquet, cut the dahlias in the morning when the flowers are already open well.

Spring Natural Cleaning

These cleaning solutions are safer for kids, pets, and the environment, and they’ll leave your home sparkling and beautiful. Save yourself the time and expense of trying every “streak-free” window cleaner on the market. Instead, mix one part vinegar to two parts water in a spray bottle. Wipe off using black-and-white newspaper or a lint-free towel.      Treat tough stains with a baking soda–and–water paste. Keep your surfaces streak-free by polishing with olive oil. Baking soda is a great way to clean and deodorize carpets. Sprinkle some down before vacuuming. You can also try cornstarch, which soaks up oils on the carpet. Cleaning grout  isn’t a cakewalk, but using baking soda is a trusted way to keep grout stain-free. Make a paste of baking soda and water, and spread it on the area. Spray vinegar on the paste to create a foaming action, then scrub and rinse. Banish hard water  stains from the bathtub by placing a vinegar-soaked paper towel over the area. Let it stand for up to two hours, then scrub with a baking soda paste and …
