Apple have  just announced the launch of the iPhone 6 family (bigger, thinner, more expensive); an Apple Pay system that eliminates the truly first-world problem of credit card swiping; and its long-awaited entry into the category of digital wearables, the Apple Watch.

What you need to know:

  1. It’s good looking. Both the hardware and software are easy on the eye.
  2. There are different versions. Watch, Watch Edition (made from 18k gold) and Watch Sport (light and durable).
  3. You need an iPhone to use it.
  4. It offers new ways to communicate. You can share your heartbeat, draw pictures and send animated emojis.
  5. It wants to make you healthier. It will count your steps, track your heartbeat, count calories, suggest fitness goals… the list goes on.
  6. You can pay with it. All of the Apple Pay functionality recently unveiled will be available on the Apple Watch.
  7. You’ll have to charge it. (And who knows long it will stay charged.)
  8. It vibrates. The watch will communicate with you through vibrations.
  9. You can talk to it. The watch will work with Siri, Apple’s voice-controlled program.
  10. Yes, it actually tells the time.

‘Our goal has always been to make powerful technology more accessible. More relevant. And ultimately more personal. Apple Watch represents a new chapter in the relationship people have with technology.’

‘It’s the most personal product we’ve ever made, because it’s the first one designed to be worn.’

‘It’s more than a tool. It’s a very personal expression. So the Apple Watch has been designed to reflect a wide range of stylistic preferences.’

‘Apple Watch is right there on your wrist, so it makes all the ways you’re used to communicating more convenient. And because it touches your skin, Apple was able to add a physical dimension to alerts and notifications — you’ll feel a gentle tap when you receive an incoming message. Apple Watch also allows you to connect with your favourite people in some new, spontaneous ways not possible with any other device.’Screen Shot 2014-09-11 at 8.53.06 AM
